The Beatles Remastered CDs (Stereo & Mono Box Sets)
By admin on Aug 26, 2009 in Music
Why should you care about the newly remastered Beatles CDs? Well if you don’t already own their albums, the new Beatles box sets are a great way to get them all. But what about those of you who already own their albums on CD (as I do)? Well there are a number of great reasons why you should buy these remastered CDs and I’m going to list five of them below.
They Sound Better
When The Beatles legendary albums were first released on CD in the 1980s, digital mastering was still in it’s infancy which is why it’s not surprising that the mastering job done on those albums was less than stellar (most audiophiles will say the old Beatles CDs sound absolutely terrible.)
These new Beatles CDs were mastered using the latest digital mastering technology (24 bit/192 kHz) which allows more of the original sound from the original tape masters to be captured and put on the CD.
This leads to CDs which sound “warmer,” “fuller,” and “more detailed.” To put it simply, they sound a lot better than the CDs you own now! To me I could stop right now, this is already a great reason to buy The Beatles Stereo Box Set and The Beatles Mono Box Set. But great sound isn’t the only reason to buy.
The Stereo & Mono Mixes Sound Different
I recommend buying both of the box sets because you will find that the stereo & mono mixes of The Beatles albums do sound significantly different from each other. The differences are more than just that the stereo mixes are panned and the mono mixes are not. There are also big differences like one version being faster than another and one version having a prominent effect (like echo on the vocals) that is not on another version.
The Packaging
These box sets look great and the packaging is excellent. I personally hate the plastic cases that CDs normally come in. The Mono Box Set is particularly cool as each album comes in vinyl LP replica packaging.
Every Beatles Song Is Included
The Beatles Stereo Box Set includes every single song The Beatles released from 1962 through 1970, while The Beatles Mono Box Set includes every song up through Yellow Submarine (Abbey Road & Let It Be are not included because they were never mixed in mono.)
The Mono Box Set Is A Limited Edition And…
Not only is the Mono Box Set only being released in limited quantities (it has already sold out in many stores!) but it’s also very important to note that the mono mixes of The Beatles albums which are contained in the set are not available for individual release!
